Morphy’s Mate

Short Film

Morphy’s Mate is a black-and-white short film that uses a chess game between two versions of the same protagonist to explore self-deception and inner conflict.

Set in a closed space during a storm, the character splits in two and plays against himself: white embodies innocence and vulnerability, while black represents malice and cynicism.

Through an increasingly tense montage, the game becomes a metaphor for the struggle between these two sides, until the “black self” cheats during a moment of distraction, gaining a false victory that is in fact a double defeat. The final fall of the black king reveals that you cannot “win” against yourself without losing something essential in your identity, highlighting how our worst enemy in pursuing goals and happiness is often our own mindset.
